Training and serving around the world

The Empire Air Training Scheme gave thousands of young Australian men the opportunity to train and serve around the world. More than 10,000 aircrew completed their training in Canada (and some married Canadian women), while more than 600 Australians also completed their training in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe).

A total of 17 (out of the allocated 18) Article XV squadrons were formed. In addition, two permanent RAAF squadrons also served in the Middle East–Europe theatre under British command. Of the 19 squadrons, seven were equipped with fighters, seven were bomber squadrons, two were light bomber squadrons and three were maritime patrol squadrons, although sometimes the roles changed. Some squadrons served in more than one theatre. In Britain, the Australian squadrons served as part of either Bomber, Coastal or Fighter Command. Table 13-1 lists the squadrons and where they were deployed.
